Losing your baggage is not as bad as it sounds with a travel insurance

Cautionary tales on travelling gone wrong without insurance are widely available online. Whether it is forgetting the cover for cancellation, emergencies, loss of valuables, or anything else – there is a hefty price to pay when you face misfortune along the way.

Take the simple example of travelling without travel insurance cover for lost baggage. When you lose your baggage in the airport, the airline you are travelling with will exclude the valuables such as cameras and jewellery. It will just pay for the depreciated value and not for the replacement cost of your clothes. So, even though the airline will provide payment for lost baggage, you will end up with less value than your original baggage’s worth.

However, if you have purchased a reliable travel insurance package, you can use the cover to claim back the lost items in your baggage, wherever and whenever you lose them. Remember that baggage cover will also have exclusions, for example money and possessions that were not kept securely in your hand carried luggage while you were travelling. Travel insurance will also not pay for baggage left unattended. Failure to report to the police station or travel insurance company within 24 hours will also invalidate your claim.

If the airline has paid for the value of your bag, the insurance company will not pay for that anymore. However, the travel insurance will cover you for the difference of the net loss the airline fails to compensate.
